The U.S. Air Force Reserve was officially created in 1948 as a separate component when the Army Air Corps Reserve was transferred to the Air Force, according to the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command.
There are approximately 70,000 Citizen Airmen currently serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. North Carolina is home to the 916th Air Refueling Wing, assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
