Modern Day National Guard

The North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) strives to be a Ready, Reliable, Responsive, and Relevant force for our Nation and State. The Army, Navy, and the Militia are Specifically Provided for in the U.S. Constitution. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that​ Congress shall have the power:​

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the  Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections, and repel  Invasions (Clause 15)​

To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining,  the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as  may be employed in the Service of the United States,  reserving to the States respectively, the  Appointment of the Officers and the Authority of  training the Militia according to the discipline  prescribed by Congress (Clause 16)

What We Do

  • Provide Ready Forces: Organize, man, equip, train, and deploy globally in support of Federal missions as directed by the President and Secretary of Defense​

  • Support Civil Authorities: Organize, man, equip, train, and deploy as directed by the Governor of North Carolina in support of State missions

  • In Our Communities: Participate in local, state and national programs that add value to our communities

The NC National Guard is organized under the Adjutant General of NC, a two-star general who commands 11,000 citizen-soldiers and airmen through six Army Major Subordinate Commands (MSCs) and the NC Air National Guard. Initially established under the Carolina Charter in 1663, the NC National Guard is part of the largest reserve component in the Department of Defense and the oldest military component in the United States Military.

  • The Army MSC’s are made up of Combat, Combat Support, and Sustainment units consisting of Armor, Infantry, Artillery, Aviation, Logistics, Special Forces, and a host of enabling units that contribute to the Army’s war-fighting capability.

  • The Air National Guard operates the C-17 Aircraft as part of the US Air Force's Strategic airlift capability. The NC Air National Guard also provides medical evacuation, airfield engineering, and tactical air support and communication.
