A Letter from Our Chairman

North Carolina has an exceptional military, phenomenal veterans and families, and an impressive defense economic sector. We look forward to telling you more about “OurNCMilitary.” We are pleased to launch our online platforms to share the vision for the future.

The North Carolina Military Affairs Commission's (NCMAC) vision is to make North Carolina the most military and veteran-friendly state in the nation. Our vision begins with military service members and their families and extends to the North Carolina defense sector, the second-largest economic sector in the state. Every citizen is a part of our vision of supporting our military, veterans, and defense sector.

Our North Carolina military serves the nation and our state in extraordinary ways. From our global response forces to the North Carolina National Guard which provides a state response in emergencies while maintaining readiness for national missions, our state’s military presence is here for us. We all have a role in advancing the quality of life for those who are called - often with no notice - to protect our lives, property, and future.  Our state’s military is both a state and national treasure.

North Carolina is home to military installations that support the nation and serve as economic engines for their local regions.  Our installations provide the training and readiness for meeting military missions while providing direct and indirect employment to the citizens of their regions.  We are committed to building installation resilience, which includes partnerships with host communities.  Our installations provide invaluable support to Army, Marine, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard missions.   Our forces include active duty, reserves, and the North Carolina National Guard.  We are very proud of our installations for the security and economic impact they provide for our state.  Our aim is to ensure North Carolina remains the location of choice for the missions these installations fulfill and to bring new missions to our state.

The North Carolina Defense sector provides jobs and economic support to every region of our state.  Our defense sector provides jobs to thousands of citizens who provide the workforce in building military and commercial use products and services. Each region of our state is home to some combination of military or defense sector manufacturing that benefits the citizens of the region.  North Carolina’s defense sector is an economic resource with an incredible capacity to attract new jobs to our state.

Our transitioning and existing veteran and military spouse workforce is an important part of the vitality of our state.  Today’s military is a high-tech force with next-generation competencies in a range of STEM specialties from cybersecurity to robotics.  Each year our state transitions 20,000 service members into the civilian workforce. This 25- to 45-year old workforce includes those retiring and seeking a second career and those who completed their military service and are seeking to launch their first civilian career.  We invite our state’s employers to “Honor Veterans by Hiring a Veteran.”

This year we will begin a series of activities to tell you about our military, veterans, and defense sector and their role in your lives and the vitality of our state.  Share the word that our military, veterans, and defense sector are the best in the nation and a part of North Carolina’s bright future.
