National Guard Celebrates 296th Birthday

December 13 recognizes the creation of the earliest militias in the United States. The first militias were based in Massachusetts to defend the colony. With the Militia Act of May 8, 1792, militias formed before that date were able to retain their "customary privileges." This means the National Guard is older than the U.S. Army.

The North Carolina National Guard is made up of 12,000 soldiers and airmen.
