Today we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s contributions to the civil rights movement in the U.S. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law, designating the third Monday of January a federal holiday in honor of Dr. King.
Eleven years later in 1994, President Bill Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act. This encourages Americans to seek out volunteer opportunities to honor Dr. King's legacy while giving back to their community and make the holiday “a day on, not a day off."
