The U.S. Navy Reserve was formed in 1915 in response to World War I. During the war, nearly 84 percent of the Navy's force was made up of Reserve members.
There are roughly 100,000 members of the U.S. Navy Reserve today. They have been deployed more than 4,500 times since September 11, 2001 to support the U.S. Navy's mission.
