Today we celebrate the establishment of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve on Aug. 29, 1916. The Marine Corps Reserve was officially established through the Naval Appropriations Act of 1916, as the demand for warfighters grew during World War I.
From just 35 Marines in April 1916, the Marine Corps Reserve has grown to be the largest command in the United States Marine Corps, boasting around 40,000 Reserve Marines and 184 Reserve Training Centers across the country.
