The last Sunday in September is recognized as Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day. This day is dedicated to recognizing the pain, grief, and sacrifices endured by mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters who have lost a family member in service.
The term "gold star" originated during World War I when families displayed blue stars for each family member serving in the armed forces. If a service member died in action, the blue star was replaced with a gold star, signifying their ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
Gold star families, which include spouses, children, parents, siblings, and others who have lost a loved one in service, are integral to our country's military community and history. Today we honor the nation's Gold Star Mothers and Families.
