Silver Star Service Banner Day is celebrated each year on May 1 to recognize those who have been awarded the Silver Star Medal and the sacrifices of injured and ill servicemembers.
The Silver Star Medal, established in 1918 as the Citation Star, is the United States Armed Forces' third-highest personal decoration for valor in combat. It is awarded primarily for acts of gallantry in action against enemies of the United States and has been granted retroactively to recognize bravery dating back to the Spanish-American War.
