North Carolina is proud to lead the nation in supporting military-connected students and families through the Purple Star Schools program. Launched in 2019, the Purple Star Award recognizes NC public schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to serving the unique needs of military children.
With over 100,000 active duty, guard, reserve and veteran armed services members, NC schools are on the frontlines of supporting military families. The Purple Star designation is awarded annually to schools that go above and beyond to welcome and support military students, from having a designated military liaison to providing professional development for staff.
In 2024, over 300 NC schools earned the Purple Star Award. This program is a model for the nation in how to build military-friendly school communities and ensure the success of our military-connected students. Congratulations to all the Purple Star Schools making a difference for military families!
