On this date in 2019, the U.S. Space Force was created through the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act. It marked the first new military branch in 73 years. The U.S. Space Force Guardians aim to "protect and defend American interests and to ensure our forces, our allies, and the world never experience a day without space."
U.S. Space Force installations are located in California, Colorado, and Florida.

Liz Hartman joined the U.S. Marine Corps when she was 20 years old and currently serves as the Commander of the American Legion Post 539. She attributes her success in her civilian career and volunteer service to the skills she gained through the Marine Corps.

She joined the Marine Corps when she was 20 years old because she felt she needed to make a drastic change to reach her desired accomplishments.
Today is National Wreaths Across America Day. Each year, fallen veterans are honored by volunteers during the holiday season. There are 34 cemeteries in North Carolina participating in National Wreaths Across America Day.
Numerous military installations across North Carolina complete updates and new construction each year. It is estimated that Fort Bragg and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune spend $200 million annually on new construction.
The North Carolina Military Business Center assists companies across the state through the Department of Defense contract bid process.

Hospital Corpsman Third Class Nathan Zachreaus makes an incision on a mannequin as part of establishing an airway via cricothyroidotomy during a training event held August 4 aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. Zachreaus and other sailors assigned to Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point conducted the practical exercise as students in Tactical Combat Casualty Care, a course designed to sharpen their battlefield medicine skills.
December 13 recognizes the creation of the earliest militias in the United States. The first militias were based in Massachusetts to defend the colony. With the Militia Act of May 8, 1792, militias formed before that date were able to retain their "customary privileges." This means the National Guard is older than the U.S. Army.
The North Carolina National Guard is made up of 12,000 soldiers and airmen.

Since 1994, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day has been observed every December 7. Before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service completed a surprise military strike on Pearl Harbor. Numerous aircraft and battleships were rendered unusable or destroyed, including the U.S.S. Arizona. In all, 2,403 American service members and civilians were killed, and the attack brought the United States into World War II.
As of September 2020, there are 20 North Carolinian service members unaccounted for who were lost on December 7, 1941.
Our defense sector provides jobs to thousands of citizens who provide the workforce in building military and commercial use products and services. Overall, the economic report model estimates that the military supports roughly 11% of North Carolina's employment.
